10 video games featuring people of color as leads

Updated: Jun 13, 2020

The video game industry is going through a lot of changes. For the past view years we have seen diversity become more and more forefront in gaming, whether it be in the games announced and presented to us, or in the presentators themselves, or in developers as well. From game after game featuring female leads and people of color as the main protagonist, or a diverse cast of characters, I thought I'd do a quick and simple list of games that feature people of color so that you may be able to decide what you'll be playing this week-end. 1. The Walking Dead Season 1, 2 & 3 (As well as the mini-series featuring Michonne)

This one is a no brainer. From its many Black leads, from Lee to Clementine to Michonne, Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier features Javier, who is Cuban-American.

2. Sunset

Now, the aesthetic of this game surely should get your attention. In Sunset, made by Tale of Tales, you'd be playing as Angela Burnes, a black woman trapped in a metropolis in a shitty job she takes to make ends meet. The game's focus I will keep a mystery, but as the title heavily implies, the story revolves around the hour before sunset, in the large city of San Bavón.

3. Tunche

Tunche, not yet released, remains therefor still a bit of a mystery. A 4-player co-op game featuring shaman witchcraft, Tunche takes place in the Amazonian jungle and features a young protagonist who seems to be a native of the Amazon.

4. Broken Age

Broken Age cause the world to implode when it first was released (at least my world), this game with stunning art, beautiful story and creative ideas (even for someone who despises puzzles) Broken Age was an absolutely gorgeous game in which one of its two main leads is Vella Tartine, a black girl about to be sacrificed to a monster in the name of tradition but who escapes to find her own path.

5. Your Royal Gayness

Created through the help of Kickstarter, Your Royal Gayness was made with the idea of pushing for more diverse game: diverse in terms of race as well as sexual orientation. In Your Royal Gayness you play as Amir, the prince, who continually gets approached by princesses. Twist that isn't at all a twist: He's gay, and so Amir has to continually find ways to reject these advances or make the very diverse in race & body type, princesses, a tad less interested. Amir, as far as I can tell, is Indian & the story takes place in a fictional Indian city.

6. In The Valley of Gods

By the same people who made Firewatch (and right there you know I'll be buying this gem) In The Valley of Gods features not one but two female leads, heavily hinted to be a married lesbian couple, one of them being a black woman. In The Valley of Gods is a single player first-person adventure game where you explore a remote valley in Egypt. I truly could not be more excited for this game.

7. Knights And Bikes

Another game yet to be released, Knights And Bikes is a cute and quirky action-adventure game where you play as Nessa & Demelza, two girls living in Britain in 1980, as a Goonies inspired game. Getting into trouble and other shenanigans.

8. Afterparty

Yet another unreleased game. Yet another game I am excited about largely for my love of their previous game, in this case, the awesome Oxenfree. Afterparty focuses on Milo and Lola, Lola being our focus here, who are best friends and, well, recently died. The game takes place in hell where they are told they are to spend eternity, so they decide to outdrink Satan in order for him to send them back to earth. Lola is the female protagonist, and she is a young black girl.

10. Tacoma

Tacoma has been out for a little while now and thus far has received a mountain of praises. From its original concept & art style to its story-line, it's really no wonder so many people talked about it. In Tacoma you play as Amitjyoti, assigned to enter the abandoned Tacoma station to retrieve AI data.
